History
Sazerac Rye is a unique limited release of High West Rendezvous Rye. Rye Whiskey dates back to the 1800s and was a popular spirit sold in bars and saloons, which used to be called coffee houses. The famed Sazerac Coffee House was founded in 1850 in New Orleans and was a well-known saloon where people gathered to enjoy fine spirits. Although it was a known place, it wasn't until 1895 that they were mentioned in print. Vincent Miret, a bartender and co-owner at the Sazerac House, gained a reputation for being the best mixer of cocktails in the city. The original recipe was a blend of brandy, sugar, and bitters, but in 1885 the brandy was swapped for Rye Whiskey. Between 1895 and 1899, Thomas H. Handy, the owner of Sazerac House, sold six bottled cocktails, but the term "Sazerac" itself didn't appear until 1901. In 1919, Handy launched the Sazerac Company just before Prohibition took effect, and the company managed to survive by incorporating a restaurant and deli. By 1933, they returned to cocktail-making, launching a bar and lunchroom and establishing a manufacturing and bottling facility in New Orleans. The recipe was renewed and bottled exclusively at the Sazerac Bar until 1949, when it moved to the Roosevelt Hotel, where it remains today. In 1952, they began producing other spirits, such as vodkas, and acquired various brands. Their success led to the purchase of several distilleries, culminating in the launch of Buffalo Trace in 1999, solidifying Sazerac’s status as one of the most recognized companies in the nation.
